Discoveries 87

Every Tuesday I offer three (or so) contributions to the web that I found interesting. I hope you, too, find them inspiring. Enjoy!

This week (02/02/2010):

Let`s start this weeks discoveries with some amazing ‘abstract paintings’ which are actually photos of different parts of the earth. Scroll through or pick your favourite from the icons at the bottom:

SWOON started out as a graffiti artist using a special approach (woodcuts/linoleum cuts) to communicate with the people on the street. Since she came in contact with Deitch Gallery (NYC) the size of her projects largely increased, as can be seen in the ‘Swimming cities of Switchback Sea’:

Grammy Award winning banjoplayer Bela Fleck went on a journey to discover the roots of his instrument - in Africa as it were. The documentary ‘Throw Down Your Heart’ shows his journey and the magnificent interplay of Bela and African musicians. Some clips are here:

Crimson Rose leads the BlackRockArts Foundation which is the group that is responsible for the (amazing) artwork at the ‘Burning Man Festival’. This (kind of lengthy) video is well worth the time if you are interested in the crazy and wonderful idea appearing at the festival for just one week! Sometimes it seems impossible to manifest ideas in such a short amount of time, but the Burning Man spirit (and the people incorporating it) turn them into reality:
